What is Bloody Diarrhoea (Parvovirus)?
Parvo, also known as bloody diarrhoea, is a very contagious, fatal disease. The disease agent is Parvovirus. The bloody diarrhoea virus settles in the gastrointestinal epithelium of puppies and multiplies rapidly. They damage white blood cells which are important for immunity.
Bloody diarrhoea disease progresses differently in puppies and adult dogs. This virus is vital for puppies. The weaker structure of puppies compared to adult dogs is not enough to fight this virus. As a result of the observations made, parvovirus has been the main factor in many of the sudden heart failure and respiratory deaths.
Additional Information: Parvovirus is a virus only seen in dogs. It cannot be transmitted to humans.
How is bloody diarrhoea (parvovirus) transmitted?
The transmission of parvovirus to dogs is quite easy. Dogs are infected with this disease through any contact. This contact belongs to the diseased animal; It can also reach through blood, faeces, urine and saliva. It may take 3 to 15 days for the infection to occur after contact. Because the incubation period of this disease lasts 10 days. Usually, parvovirus enters the body through the mouth. Infected dogs shed large amounts of virus with their faeces for at least 2 weeks. The virus survives in the environment for more than 1 year. You can infect your pet with this disease even with the virus coming from the shoe after stepping on the infected ground. In addition, dogs with low immunity can get sick even by smelling the place where the virus is found.

What are the Symptoms of Bloody Diarrhoea (Parvovirus)?
The most prominent symptom of bloody diarrhoea is that the infected dog starts with severe vomiting at first and the stool is in the form of bloody diarrhoea. As the body loses fluid due to diarrhoea, the dog's eyes turn yellow and fatigue is seen. On the other hand, the symptoms seen are as follows;
- Loss of appetite, stagnation
- High fever
- Abdominal pain
- Weight loss, fluid loss
Not all dogs affected by the parvo virus will exhibit the above symptoms, but vomiting and bloody diarrhoea are common symptoms in all dogs.
Take your dog to the veterinarian immediately after these symptoms. Bloody diarrhoea is a very deadly disease. Dogs under 6 months of age are usually affected by this disease.
Diagnosis :
Bloody diarrhoea can be very difficult to diagnose because the symptoms of this disease in dogs are seen in many disease symptoms. However, when vomiting and diarrhoea are seen in puppies, parvo virus should be suspected and our veterinarian should be consulted immediately in our clinic. Our veterinarian performs biochemical tests, physical examination and stool samples to determine whether the dog is infected with the virus. Thanks to early diagnosis in line with these results, your dog's recovery rate reaches up to 60%-80%.
Treatment :
It is very important to recognise bloody diarrhoea in the early period. There is no medicine to eliminate the parvo virus that causes bloody diarrhoea. Symptomatic treatments applied to other viral diseases are applied. Serum is given to balance the fluid lost in the body as a result of excessive vomiting and diarrhoea. Antibiotics are used to prevent infectious complications in the blood. In the treatment, our dog's body resistance is increased by using drugs such as vitamins, blood-stopping drugs, probiotics, vomiting suppressants and stomach protectors. The treatment period lasts approximately 2 weeks. Treatment should not be interrupted until the dog's own routine feeding process. The most important factor you should pay attention to is that your dog will continue to carry this virus in its body for 2 months, so you will need to isolate your dog until this time to prevent your dog from passing the disease to other dogs.
Prevention :
In order to prevent bloody diarrhoea cases, regular vaccination is required from the puppyhood period. Regular clinical checks should be carried out until the vaccines in the vaccination programme are completed. To protect your dog from bloody diarrhoea, the mixed vaccine should be administered in 3 doses before the age of 1 year. This is the only and most effective way to protect against the virus. However, you should pay attention to your dog's hygiene. You should use cleaning products with a strong germicidal effect such as bleach in the environment where your dog is located, and you should also keep your dog away from the crowded dog community in the outdoor environment, even if the vaccines are complete.
