Plants Harmful to Cats

It is our duty to accompany our best friends in the best possible way and to provide them with a magnificent environment. It is useful to pay attention to the plants mentioned.

1- Monstrea Deliciosa (Camel Base)

Poisonous for Cat

Monstrea deliciosa, also known as camel's foot, is one of the most popular tropical houseplants today. Especially thanks to its remarkable leaves, we often see it both on social media and in design ideas. Although it makes our homes interesting and has a complementary beauty for our decor, it is one of the poisonous plants for cats due to the calcium oxalates it contains. Insoluble calcium oxalates cause burning and swelling of the lips and mouth, excessive salivation and vomiting when cats come into contact with them.

2- Epipremnum Aureum (Parlor Ivy)

Parlor Ivy

Epipremnum aureum, known as indoor ivy, is one of the preferred plants for people who are inexperienced in plant care due to its easy care. This plant, which adds movement and aesthetics to our homes, contains poison for our cats. As with the camel's foot plant, it contains insoluble calcium oxalates, which can cause symptoms such as burning and swelling in the mouth and lips if cats swallow this plant.

3- Crassula Ovata (Jade Plant)

Crassula Ovata plant

Crassula ovata, which has gained popularity as a money plant, is also believed to bring good luck. Unfortunately, it is a poisonous plant for dogs, horses and cats. Especially when ingested, it causes serious symptoms, starting with vomiting, lethargy, depression and loss of balance.

4- Sansevieria Trifasciata (Pasha Sword)

Sansevieria Trifasciata

Sanssevieria trifasciata, known as the pasha sword, is one of the plants we grow in our homes with its visually interesting, easy care and reproduction. As well as being a durable plant, it also has the ability to clean the air. Despite its many benefits, unfortunately, it is in the category of poisonous plants for living things in our homes. It is a poisonous plant for both dogs and cats due to the chemical compound saponins it contains. It causes serious symptoms, especially when swallowed.

5- Dieffenbachia (Difenbahia - Dumb Cane)

Difenbahia

Difenbahia is a tropical plant species whose leaves last for a shorter period of time, unlike other living room plants. Although it does not bloom, it is used as a stylish decoration complement in our living rooms. Difenbahia is highly poisonous for cats. Due to the insoluble calcium oxalates and proteolytic enzyme it contains, it can cause burning in the mouth and lips, as well as difficulty swallowing or breathing in more serious cases. It is known to be toxic not only to cats but also to humans. It should be kept away from bare skin. If the leaves are eaten, the person cannot speak for a while. This is where the popularly known Mute Walking Stick gets its name. Although it is a plant that we love visually, it is necessary to be very careful when using it.

6- Aloe Vera

Aleo Vera plant

Aleo Vera plant, which comes from the lily family, is a highly preferred plant due to its medicinal properties. The liquid inside its thick and fleshy leaves is good for many skin problems. However, it is a poisonous plant for cats due to the saponins and anthraquinones it contains. When ingested, it can cause lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and more serious symptoms.

7- Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily)

Peace Lily

Spathiphyllum, also known as Peace Lily, is one of our favorite plants in our living rooms with its low maintenance needs and different flowers that bloom in spring. Spathiphyllum is one of the poisonous plants for cats due to the insoluble calcium oxalates it contains. It is harmless on contact, but ingestion causes vomiting, irritation, excessive drooling and in severe cases swallowing and breathing difficulties. It would be the best solution to keep this plant species, which we often prefer as a gift, away from our cat-owning loved ones.

8- Yucca Massengena (Yuka)

Yuka

Yuka, one of my favorite indoor plants, is a plant that loves plenty of light, is hardy and needs little water. It is one of the most preferred living room plants with its aesthetic body and being interesting. We frequently see it on social media and on all design and decoration pages. This plant, which grows widely in the desert, contains steroidal saponins. It is poisonous for cats, dogs and large animals. When eaten by cats and dogs, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and incoordination.

9- Dracaena Marginata (Madagascar Dragon Tree)

 Madagascar Dragon Tree

Dracaena marginata, also known as Dragon tree or Marginata, a stylish indoor plant resistant to heat and humidity, native to Madagascar, is poisonous due to its chemical compound saponin. It poses a serious risk to both cats and dogs. If our dog eats the leaves, symptoms such as vomiting with or without blood, loss of appetite, depression may occur; if our cat eats the leaves, the same symptoms will be accompanied by dilated pupils.

10- Kalanchoe

Kalanchoe, a tropical plan

Kalanchoe, a tropical plant from the Succulent family, is one of the plant species we prefer to add color to our homes with its colorful flower options. According to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), all parts of the Kalanchoe plant contain toxins that cause drooling, vomiting and diarrhea. In rare cases, if cats ingest large amounts of Kalanchoe, their heart rhythms can be disrupted. They can even experience severe symptoms such as seizures and fainting. Cat owners are advised to never keep this plant at home.
